Melt the butter in a non stick or cast iron pan over medium-low heat for about 2 minutes.
Crack the egg on a flat surface and gently open it over the pan. Using the tines of a fork, drag the yolk to break it. This will help cook the yolk and whites evenly without burning the egg too much. Cook for 4-5 minutes.
Using a spatula, gently flip the egg and and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until the yolk is completely cooked. Gently slide the spatula under the egg, lift it from the pan, and place it on a plate to serve. Season with salt and pepper.
