  1. Slice your sourdough bread into ยพ" thick slices.
  2. In a bowl, mix the eggs, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt together with a whisk.
  3. Soak the bread slices for 10 minutes on each side.
  4. Heat the butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the bread 3-4 minutes per side.

Serve warm with butter and maple syrup!

Tips for success

  • Before you start cooking, preheat your oven to 400 degrees and place a baking sheet inside. Transfer the cooked french toast slices to the oven to keep warm until you are finished cooking and ready to serve.
  • Make sure your skillet is preheated over medium-low heat before you start cooking. You don't want to cook it too quickly and burn the custard. It needs to cook slowly to cook evenly.
  • The bread should be cut into ยพ" slices for the best results. If it's thinner, the bread won't be able to stand up to the custard and may fall apart. Day old or stale bread is best for french toast.
  • Use a combination of butter and vegetable oil to prevent the butter from burning in the skillet.

How to store and reheat

Leftovers can be stored, wrapped in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees until warmed through.

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 slices sourdough bread (ยพ" thick)
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) butter
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) vegetable oil

Custard ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 g) heavy cream
  • ยผ teaspoon (2 g) fine sea salt
  • ยฝ teaspoon (3 g) ground cinnamon
  • ยผ teaspoon (2 g) ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 400ยฐ and place a baking sheet inside. Heat skillet over medium-low heat with the butter and oil.
  • Use a whisk to combine the eggs, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Pour the custard mixture into a shallow baking dish. Soak 2 slices of bread 10 minutes on each side.
  • Cook the slices on the 3-4 minutes per side. (Place the next 2 slices in the custard to soak while the current slices are cooking.) Transfer to the oven on the baking sheet to keep them warm until you are ready to serve.

    I have made sourdough French toast and love it. instead of oil I use ghee. it doesn't burn or smoke and the flavor is great.

    Excellent recipe! I doubled recipe and had almost enough for a whole loaf pan loaf. I cut the pieces in half. Soooo good! My grandsonโ€™s bday is today (Jan 1) & we had it for breakfast. Thank you!
